Abstract

Elderly patients face many challenges during hospitalization, including maintaining
good nutrition or preventing malnutrition-related complications. This study aims to assess
the nutritional status among patients at intensive care unit, National Geriatric Hospital. A
cross-sectional study was conducted on 86 patients between October 2017 and February
2018. Nutritional status was evaluated by measuring arm circumference, BMI, and nutrition risks were identified by Nutrition Risk Screening 2002 (NRS), NUTRIC score. The
results showed that, the median of middle arm circumference was 24.1 ± 3.3 cm and the
thickness of the subcutaneous fat was 11.2 ± 6.4 mm. The median BMI was 21 ± 2.9 kg/m
2.
According to the NRS 2002, 86.1% of patients were at risk of malnutrition. According to
the NUTRIC Score, 83.7% of patients were at low risk of malnutrition and 16.3% were at
high risk of malnutrition. The incidence of mechanical ventilation at high NUTRIC score
was 6.2 times higher than non-ventilated patients. This difference was statistically significant with p <0.01.
Conclusion: The proportion of patients at risk of malnutrition in the intensive care
unit, National Geriatric Hospital was very high, accounting for 86.1% of NRS 2002 and
83.7% of NUTRIC, and most patients would be benefit from nutritional intervention in
hospitals, especially those with mechanical ventilation.
