Abstract

Acute respiratory infections (ARI) are a group of common childhood illnesses that have
a high mortality rate, particularly pneumonia. ARI and Malnutrition make a vicious circle
during treatment, increasing the severity of the disease leading to growth failure of the
children.
Objectives: To assess the nutritional status of the children aged 6-60 months
with acute respiratory infections at two district hospitals in Thai Binh province in 2017.
A cross-sectional study was conducted on 218 pediatric patients with acute respiratory infections between February and April 2017. Results: At admission, the percentage of malnutrition was 24.8%. After three days of admission, this rate was 28.9% . The proportion of patients with pneumonia have the highest rates of malnutrition of 27.7%, followed by
upper respiratory infections and lower respiratory infections of 19.6% and 11.8%, respectively. The prevalence of weight loss in pediatric patients with pneumonia was higher than patients with upper respiratory infections (59.4% vs. 52.2%).
