Abstract

A cross-sectional study to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity among
primary school students at two schools in Thuan Chau district and Son La city, Son La
province in 2020. A total of 865 children aged 7-11 years old in the area were selected
to participate in the study. Indicators such as age, gender, weight, and height were collected.
BMI Z-score for age (BAZ) was used to assess the prevalence of overweight and
obesity in children. The results showed that overweight and obesity rate of 7-11 years old
students in the study area was 26.8% (in which, overweight was 16.6% and obesity was
10.2%). Children 7-11 years old in Son La had high rates of overweight and obesity, and
needed timely nutritional monitoring and intervention.
