STUNTING STATUS AND ITS RELATION TO ANEMIA AND ZINC DEFICIENCY IN CHILDREN 12-47 MONTHS OLD IN TAM DAO DITRICT, VINH PHUC PROVINCE IN 2014

Abstract

Anemia and zinc deficiency are closely associated to stunting. The study was conducted to assess the situation of stunting and determine the relationship between anemia, zinc deficiency and stunting in children from 12 to 47 months in Tam Dao district of Vinh Phuc in 2014. The study was conducted on children from 12 to 47 months at Dai Dinh, Yen Duong, Bo Ly communes of Tam Dao district. The study design consisted of 2 phases, phase 1 using cross-sectional study which conducted anthropometric measurements on 868 children to assess stunting. Phase 2 using case-control study, conducted blood tests of 177 stunted children and 177 non-stunted children to assess anemia and zinc deficiency and the association of anemia, zinc deficiency on stunting. Proportion of stunting in Tam Dao was 27.5%. Anemia and zinc deficiency had significant association with stunting with OR of 1.7 (95% CI: 1.0 to 3.0) and 26.6 (95% CI: 13.5 to 54.8), respectively.
