Abstract

Aims: To identify the malnutrition status and associated factors in children aged under 5 years in Duong Thanh commune, Phu Binh district, Thai Nguyen province.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between February and December 2022 on 685 children aged under 5 years in Duong Thanh commune, Phu Binh district, Thai Nguyen province. The nutrition status was classified using the references of the World Heath Organization, 2006. The associated factors were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression.

Results: The prevalence of malnutrition among the children was 17.5% (15.8% for boys and 18.9% for girls). Among the children, the stunting rate was highest (%), followed by underweight (6.1%) and wasting (4.1%). The malnutrition of the chidren was significantly associated with birth order of the children (OR = 1.56, p =0.032) as well as the patterns of the caretakers including lower education level (OR = 1.44, p =0.018), not good knowledge (OR = 1.49, p =0,048) and not good practice (OR = 1.68, p =0.043) for control of malnutrition.

Conclusion: Malnutrition was prevalent among children under 5 years of age in the study area. The associated factors found in the study should be considered in the strengthening of nutrition education and communication for child’s caretaker to improve the malnutrition status of children under 5 years of age.
