Abstract

A cross-sectional study was conducted on 524 mothers having children aged 0-23
months in four communes in Thanh Son District, Phu Tho province to determine breastfeeding practices. The study results showed that the proportion of children who were put to the breast within one hour of birth was 55.2%; proportion of exclusive breastfeeding
among infants less than 6 months was 39.3%; proportion of predominant breastfeeding
was 14.7%. The proportion of children less 2 years ever breastfed was 100%, the proportion of children continuing to be breastfed at 1 year was 92% and at 2 years was 33%. The
proportion of children bottle-fed was 6.1%. Approximately 47.5% of mothers had breastfeeding difficulties such as inflammatory/engorgement, breast abscess and cracked nipples.
