THE NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF CHILDREN UNDER 25 MONTHS OLD WITH ACUTE DIARRHEA AT THE GASTROENTEROLOGY DEPARTMENT IN THAI BINH PEDIATRIC HOSPITAL IN 2019

Abstract

A cross-sectional sutdy was conducted at gastroenterology department in Thai Binh
pediatric hospital in 2019 to assess the nutritional status of children under 25 months
old with acute diarrhea. The results showed that 62.4% of children were boys and 37.6%
of children were girls. At the time of admission, the prevalence of wasting, stunting,
underweight among children under 25 months old were accounted for 23.3%, 16.7%,
and 17.7%, respectively. At the time of discharge, the rate of wasting and underweight
increased to 28.4% and 19.7% respectively. The rates of wasting, stunting, underweight
in boys were higher than in girls. The highest malnutrition rate was found in children
aged 7-12 months old at both the time of admission and discharge. In particular, the
wasting and underweight percentages at the time of admission (28%; 22.3%) were lower as compared with the time of discharge (33.8%; 24.2%). The rate of underweight,
stunting, and wasting in severely dehydrated children was high with 20.9%, 16.3%,
and 25.6%, respectively. The rate of children with at least one type of malnutrion was
highest at both the time of admission and discharge with 42% and 45.1%, respectively.
The lowest rate was found in children with three types of malnutrition with 0.5% at the
time of admission compared to 1.5% at the time of discharge.
