PREVALENCE OF OSTEOPENIA, OSTEOPOROSIS, AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS AMONG WOMEN AGED 40-60 YEARS WORKING AT THONG NHAT HOSPITAL IN 2025

Abstract

Aims: To determine the prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis and to identify associated factors among women aged 40-60 years working at Thong Nhat Hospital.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 131 women aged 40-60 years. Anthropometric measurements were obtained, bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (Hologic model Discovery Wi), and serum vitamin D concentrations were determined. Menopausal status was assessed through interviews. Osteopenia was defined as a T-score ≤ −1.0 at either total lumbar spine, total femoral or femoral neck, while osteoporosis was defined as a T-score ≤ −2.5 at either site.

Results: The prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis was 39,7% (95% CI: 31,7–48,3) and 6,1% (95% CI: 3,1–11,6), respectively. The overall prevalence of low bone mineral density was 45,8% (95% CI: 37,5–54,3). Obesity was present in 18,3% of participants, and 96,2% had serum 25-OH vitamin D levels below 30 ng/mL. In the multivariable model, age was independently associated with osteoporosis after adjustment for BMI. For every 5-year increase in age, the odds of osteoporosis increased 7,71-fold (OR = 7,71; 95% CI: 2,40–43,68; p < 0,001).

Conclusions: Low bone density and vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency are common among women aged 40-60 years. Age was independently associated with osteoporosis.
