EVALUATION OF SODIUM AND POTASSIUM CONTENT DECLARED COMPARED TO LABORATORY EXAMINATION AMONGST REDUCED SODIUM SALT/SEASONING PRODUCTS IN VIETNAM

Abstract
Objective: To assess the compliance of nutrition labelling and quantify the agreement between declared analytically measured sodium and potassium content in reduced-sodium salt products and salty condiments available on the Vietnam market.
Methods: A cross-sectional market surveillance study of commercially available products self-declared reduced-sodium salts and salty condiments was conducted. Nutritional labeling information was collected and compared with applicable regulations; the sodium and potassium content declared on the product labels were compared with laboratory analysis results. Agreement was evaluated using tolerance thresholds of ±10% and ±20%
Results: All products (n=9) reported basic identification information (100%), while nutrient disclosure was variable: sodium was declared in 88.9% of products, potassium in 55.6%, and energy in 22.2%. Substantial discrepancies were observed with 0-33.3% of sodium values and 22.2-55.6% of potassium values exceeded declared levels, 33.3% of products contained sodium despite no declaration on the label, and 44.4% contained potassium without corresponding labelling.
Conclusion: Inconsistent nutrition labelling and discrepancies between declared and measured sodium and potassium content from the products collected may limit their safe and effective use. Strengthening labelling accuracy, regulatory enforcement, and consumer communication is essential to enable informed choice and to support the responsible promotion of potassium‑enriched salt within national salt‑reduction and non‑communicable disease prevention strategies.
