Abstract

A cross-sectional study was conducted in 400 third-year students (53.5% males) majoring
in general medicine at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine in 2020 in
order to evaluate nutritional status by body mass index (BMI) using WHO and WRPO/
IDI criteria and percent body fat (% BF). Height, weight and % BF of participants were
measured. % BF was determined using a Tanita body composition analyser (SC-331S).
Using BMI category from WHO, there was 68.5% of the students had healthy weight
range, the prevalences of chronic energy deficiency (CED) and overweight/obesity
were 11.3% and 20.3%, respectively. Nutritional status classification using % BF was
similar between WHO criteria compared to WRPO/IDI criteria. There was a statistically
significant difference in BMI in regards to gender as well as rural/urban areas, in
which the mean BMI of male students was significantly higher (p<0.001) compared to
that of female students and the mean BMI of urban students was also higher than that
of rural students (p<0.05).
