Main Article Content
Abstract
Aims: To describe the characteristics of the local food system and analyze its relationship with nutrition security in Mai Son district, Son La province.
Methods: A qualitative study was conducted in four communes of Mai Son district from June 2023 to June 2024. Data were collected through 12 focus group discussions and 35 in-depth interviews with household representatives, health workers, agricultural staff, village heads, and local food vendors. Content analysis was performed following the FoodSENSE framework using a thematic approach.
Results: The local food system is mainly subsistence-based, relying on small-scale farming and traditional markets. Although animal-source foods are available, household consumption remains low due to high prices, limited nutrition awareness, cultural habits, and inadequate food storage. Plant-based foods such as vegetables, grains, and fruits are largely home-produced with minimal market exchange, resulting in low diversity and seasonal dependence. Weak linkages between production and consumption, together with limited local policy support, have contributed to increased risks of nutrition insecurity, particularly during the lean season.
Conclusions: The local food system in Mai Son district has several limitations affecting access to and consumption of nutrient-rich foods. Strengthening food system linkages, promoting behavior change communication, and empowering communities are essential to improve sustainable nutrition security.
