Abstract

Aims: To identify factors associated with knowledge and practices regarding dietary salt use among homemakers in Nam Dinh City in 2025.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 420 female homemakers aged 18–65 years from six wards/communes of Nam Dinh City. Participants were interviewed using a structured questionnaire to collect demographic information and variables related to salt-use knowledge and practices. Data were entered with EpiData 3.1 and analyzed using SPSS 20.0.

Results: Overall, 41.9% of participants demonstrated good knowledge and 34.3% reported good practices regarding salt use. Multivariable logistic regression revealed significant associations of good knowledge with age (OR = 3.65; 95% CI: 2.19–6.07), educational attainment (OR = 16.89; 95% CI: 3.89–73.24), household economic status (OR = 6.51; 95% CI: 1.76–23.99), and family structure (OR = 3.19; 95% CI: 1.76–5.81). Homemakers with good knowledge were 8.86 times more likely to demonstrate appropriate salt-use practices compared with those with inadequate knowledge (OR = 8.86; 95% CI: 4.19–18.73).

Conclusions: Age, educational level, household economic status, and family structure significantly influence both knowledge and practices related to dietary salt consumption. Community salt-reduction programs should prioritize health education strategies, focusing on individuals with lower educational attainment and older adults to improve awareness and promote sustainable reductions in salt intake.
