IMPACTS OF HUMAN MILK BANK ON NEWBORN FEEDING PRACTICES

Abstract

Breast milk is the best nutrition for newborns and infants as well as the most effective
intervention to reduce child mortality and morbidity. However, there remains unfortunate
newborns who do not have their mother’s own milk in the first few days of life.
Human milk bank is a service to recruit donors, store raw milk, pasteurize raw milk,
screen the milk before and after pasteurization, and deliver pasteurized donated milk to
newborns in need. The first human milk bank in Vietnam was established in Da Nang
Hospital for Women and Children in February 2017. Until October 2020, there are
three human milk banks in Vietnam and one service delivery network in Quang Nam.
This paper aims to describe the importance of breastfeeding, principles and benefits
of a human milk bank. This paper also analyzes the impacts of human milk banks on
newborn feeding including breastfeeding knowledge and practices in the community,
feeding practices for high risk newborns, feeding practices for healthy newborns and
the role of human milk bank in the COVID-19 pandemic.
