Abstract

Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of malnutrition and identify associated factors among children under 5 years of age residing in Yen Thang and Yen Khuong communes, Lang Chanh district, Thanh Hoa province, in 2023.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2023, enrolling 678 children under 5 years of age and their primary caregivers from the aforementioned communes in Lang Chanh district, Thanh Hoa province. Data were collected using anthropometric measurements and a structured questionnaire. Nutritional status was assessed based on WHO 2006 Z-scores, and statistical tests were applied to investigate associated factors.

Results: The prevalence of stunting was 18.8%, underweight was 13.7%, and wasting was 2.5%. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was low, at 0.9% and 0.6%, respectively. Factors significantly associated with childhood malnutrition included the child's gender, maternal education level, and a history of respiratory infections (p<0.05).

Conclusion: The prevalence of malnutrition among children under 5 years of age in the study area remains high. The results underscore the necessity for targeted nutritional intervention programs for children under 5 years, alongside expanded nutrition education and communication initiatives. Furthermore, enhancing mothers' access to health information and services is crucial.
