Abstract

Objective: The study aimed to identify the prevalence of overweight and obesity and
exam the association of adherence to diet and lifestyle with the status of overweight
and obesity among patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) receiving outpatient treatment
in a hospital. Method: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 280
outpatients with type 2 diabetes in Bach Mai hospital from December 2019 to September
2020 by using assessments of anthropometric parameters and examining dietary
habits and lifestyle. Results: The prevalence of overweight and obesity in patients with
T2D was 35.4%. Patients who never or rarely ate the recommended foods, rarely or
never had exercises had a higher risk of overweight and obesity than the other groups
(OR: 3.39; 2.77; with p <0.05, respectively). Patients who used alcohol and tobacco
had a statistically higher risk of overweight and obesity than those who did not (OR:
3.128 and 3.246, p <0.001, respectively). Conclusion and recommendation: It is necessary
to promote for type 2 diabetic patients to comply the diet and lifestyles properly
to reduce the risk of overweight and obesity as well as to increase the effectiveness of
diabetes treatment.
