Abstract

Objectives: Assessment of the pre- and post-operative nutrition status of patients
with gastrointestinal (GI) surgery at 175 Military Hospital. Methods: This descriptive
cross-sectional study was carried out on 98 elective GI surgery patients in Department
of Abdominal Surgery – 175 Military Hospital. Results: The prevalence of weight
loss patients before surgery was 82,7%. The rates of undernutrition according to SGA,
MUAC, BMI were 54,1%, 34,7%, 24,5%, 42,8%, respectively. The rate of patients
with anemia before surgery was 48%. The weight at discharge was lower than before
surgery, most of patients had weight loss. The average pre-op BMI was 20,55; and the
discharge BMI was 19,45, which was a statistically significant (p < 0,05). Conclusions:
Undernutrition was common in GI surgery patients at 175 Military Hospital in
2020. The elective GI surgery patients need to be assessed the nutrition status accurately;
and nutritional intervention needs to be initiated immediately.
