Abstract

Nutrition practices play an important role in treatment and prevention of complications
of diabetes mellitus. Objective: To describe nutritional practices and some
related factors of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Method: Cross-sectional descriptive
study was conducted on 440 outpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Dong
Anh General Hospital, Hanoi - using pre-designed questionnaire interview method.
Results: The prevalence of good nutritional practices of patients accounted for 37%.
Patients with the educational level of high school or higher had a good practice prevalence
of 78.5%, while that of patients with secondary educational level or lower was
18%. The prevalence of married people compared to those with other marital status
was 38.8% and 27.4%, respectively; those of subjects with underweight or normal
nutritional status compared to overweight or obese were 39.2% and 22.1%. The prevalence
of patients who have been informed about nutrition compared to those who have
never heard about it were 41.7% and 23.1%. Conclusion: Good nutrition practices
of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus still account for a low percentage, there is a
relationship between nutritional practice with the education level, marital status, communication
factors.
