Abstract

Aims: To evaluate the impact of the model of Center of Excellence for Breastfeeding on mothers’ breastfeeding practices and health staff’s counseling practice.

Methods: 295 mothers giving birth at the 3 hospitals recognized for Excellence for Breastfeeding (intervention group) and 184 mothers giving birth at 5 other hospitals not recognized yet (control group) were randomly chosen to interview through telephone to evaluate their breastfeeding practices; 41 health staff members of each hospital group were evaluated on their counseling and instructing skills on breastfeeding given to post delivery mothers.

Results: Exclusive breastfeeding rate through 2 months was significantly higher in the intervention group than that in the control group: 81.4% vs 71.2% (p = 0.01). The percentage of applying skin to skin contact for 90 minutes or longer in the intervention group was higher than that of the control group; 63.2% vs 36.8% (p<0.01). The percentage of mothers not receiving breastfeeding counseling in the control group was higher than that of the intervention group: 7.2% vs 2.0% (p<0,01); and the percentage of feeding formula milk was more than twice as high in the control group as in the intervention group: 19.6% vs 7.2% (p<0.01). Mean score of counseling skills on breastfeeding, and the percentage of passing evaluating score of health staff in the intervention group was significantly higher than that in the control group: 27.1 points vs 23.7; and 100% vs 53.7% (p<0,001).

Conclusion: The model of Hospitals of Excellence for Breastfeeding has had positive impacts on breastfeeding practice of mothers and counseling skills of health staff.
