Main Article Content
Abstract
Stroke is a common disease in the elderly. Brain damage after stroke causes metabolic
disorders and physiological disorders that will lead to malnutrition. This study aims
to assess the nutritional status and feeding situation of stroke patients at National Geriatric
Hospital. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 125 patients between August
2018 and March 2019. The results showed that, the average patient's median BMI on
hospital admission was 21,6 ± 2,2 kg/m2 and after 1 week this value was 21,5 ± 2,1.
Prevalence of malnutrition according to BMI on hospital admission was 16,8%, after 1
week this prevalence was 22,4%. According to the NRS 2002, 77,6% of patients were
at risk of malnutrition. The prevalence of patients received gastric tube feeding was
68%. All patients fed early within 24 to 48 hours after hospital admission. Prevalence
of patients reaching to energy expenditure 25-30 kcal/kg/day on hospital admission
was 22,4%, this prevalence was increased 48,8% after 1 week.
Conclusion: On hospital admission, the prevalence of patients at risk of malnutrition
was high and increased after 1 week of hospitalization. Patients most fed enteral nutrition
within 24 to 48 hours. Energy and Protein expenditure both increased after 1 week
of hospitalization but were not enough than the recommendations.
