Abstract

Nutrition has an important role in medical therapy. Good nutrition care helps to decrease the hospital malnutrition, decrease the risk of hospital infection complication, shorten the health recovery period and wound healing, shorten the length of hospital stay, decrease the treatment expense, as well as contribute significantly to the quality of medical treatment and decrease the issues related to hospital overload and hospital bed sharing among tertiary hospitals in Viet Nam.
     According to the epidemiology studies at several countries, there were at least 1/3 of hospitalized patients were malnourished and without nutritional care, the nutritional status of these patients would further deteriorate. In HCMC, the prevalence of hospital malnutrition was 35-40%. Malnutrition during hospitalization is not only originate from medical reasons, medical treatment, the habit of consume food bring from home or buying from outside hospital, but also come from the lack of appropriate investment from leaders of hospitals for nutrition and dietetics services.
     The Vietnamese Hospital Quality Standard from Ministry of Health has an important role in pushing the implementation of nutrition and dietetics activities in hospitals. However, criteria in nutrition were among the most difficult criteria to conduct due to several reasons. The lessons from HCMC in increasing the quality and standardize nutrition and dietetics in hospital including the following main factors: policies and action plan, leaders from different levels and hospital, establishment of Nutrition and Dietetics Department, professional development, arrangement and improvement the infrastructure and equipments; role of experts; development the guidelines such as nutrition care flowchart, screening and assessment tools and medical nutrition menu set.
