Abstract

A cross sectional study was conducted among children under 5 years old and their mothers at the immunization and nutrition clinic of Hanoi Medical University. A total of 250 children under the age of 5 years and their mothers were recruited for the study. The prevalance of underweight (WAZ), stunting (HAZ) and wasting (WHZ) were 3.6%, 14.8% and 3.2%, respectively. The risk of malnutrition in children whose mothers' occupation of public servants was 4.63 times, in children whose birth weights less than 2500 gr was 14.94 times, in children whose households' income less than 10 milion VND per month was 4.89 times, in children of mothers with wrong knowledge of complimentary feeding time was 2.53 times, in children who were not given oresol during diarrhea was 3.07 times. The prevalence of malnutrition in children under five is still high which is associated with low birth weight, low household income level, lack of knowledge about complimentary feeding time of mothers and mothers' practice in giving oresol during diarrhea.
