Abstract

A cross-sectional study was managed on 400 third-year medical students at Pham
Ngoc Thach University of Medicine in 2020 (53.5% males) to explore situation of
knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) via a KAP structured-questionnaire using
the Guidelines for assessing nutrition-related Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices in
2014 of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Results:
The majority of students in this research had adequate knowledge level about causes
(99.8%), consequences (94.3%) and prevention methods of overweight and obesity
(99.5%). Most of students recognized that overweight and obesity had adverse impacts
on health (78.0%) but only 33.0% students self-assessed that they were at risk of being
overweight or obese. There were 82.5% of students, who thought that a controlled
diet would bring good benefits, but only 16.3% felt it was not difficult to follow. The
percentage of students who had no physical activity regime accounted for one third of
the study subjects (33.2%) Conclusion: Students need appropriate educational interventions
to improve attitude and practices on overweight and obesity according to FAO
guidelines.
