Abstract

Survey on nutritional status, inappropriate eating habits related to overweight- obesity
(OVOB) of the middle school children (Ai Mo, Long Bien, Hanoi) was conducted in September 2018. Height and weight of children (n = 597) from grade 6 to 9 were taken, while
knowledge and practices on nutrition were investigated by interviews Results showed that
the prevalence of OVOB was 36.3%, in which obesity was 8.6%; OVOB in school-boys
was 48%, in school-girls was 25.8. The highest OVOB prevalence belonged to 6th grade
(47.1%), then reduced to 23.5% in 9th grade. The prevalence of subjects having good nutritional knowledge was about 90-98%; however, the inappropriate practices on nutrition,
especially in the prevention of OVOB was about 40-60%. Food habit such as daily consumption of sweat soft drinks, pizza/sandwich, snacks, French fries; playing games > 2h
daily, little or no physical exercise were high risk factors associated with obesity. The
OVOB prevalence of the Ai Mo Middle School is at the very high level of public health
significance.
