Abstract

A case-control study of 145 subjects having increased uric acid level and 301 subjects
having normal uric acid level in Phung town and Tan Hoi commune, Dan Phuong district,
Hanoi to determine the relationship between physical activities and status of blood uric
acid in adults aged 40-69 years old. Capillary blood in the fingertip of subjects was taken
to measure serum uric acid and all subjects were interviewed about physical activity during
the previous month. The results showed that the sedentary time of the increased blood
uric acid level group (3.4 hours) was significantly higher compared to the normal blood
uric acid group (2.8 hours) with p<0.05. The subjects having sedentary time ≥ 5 hours/day
were 2 times (OR=2, 95% CI: 1.2-3.4) and 2.7 times (OR= 2.7; 95% CI:1.6-4.6) higher
the risk of suffering from increased uric acid and overweight and obesity as compared to
normal uric acid. The average daily time spent on physical activity of increased uric acid
group (214.5 minutes/day) was similar to that of normal uric acid group (219.4
minutes/day), p>0.05, there was 50% of subjects in both groups having equal or more
than 120 minutes/day of physical activities. There was also no significant difference between the increased uric acid level group and the normal uric acid level group in the prevalence of physical inactivity in working, in transportation, in sport/entertainment. There
was no significant difference between two groups about the prevalence of physical inactivity of vigorous-intensity physical activity, moderate intensity physical activity.
