DIETARY INTAKE OF CHILDREN UNDER 24 MONThS OLD IN CHIENG MUNG AND MUONG BON COMMUNE, MAI SON DISTRICT, SON LA PROVINCE IN 2016

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the diet of children under 24 months old in Chieng Mung and
Muong Bon communes, Mai Son district, Son La province in 2016.
Methods: A crosssectional descriptive study was conducted on 174 caregivers which children under 24
months of age in Chieng Mung and Muong Bon communes. Direct interviews on child
diet were conducted using 24 hour recall method.
Results: Among children aged 6-11
months: dietary energy was 550.8 Kcal, meeting 77.6% RDA; protein and lipid intake
was 131% and 52% of total requirement; Vitamin A and vitamin C did not reach the required level (96.8% and 86.1%, respectively), the lowest is Calcium of 49% compared to
the RDA. In children aged 12-23 months, the dietary energy of male children was 887.7
kcal meeting 88.7% RDA; protein and lipid levels met 187.2% and 76.2% RDA. For girls,
dietary energy was 809.9 kcal, meeting 87.1% of demand, protein and lipid level was
171.1% and 75.1%, respectively. Calcium intake met only 46.6% of RDA.
conclusion:
The diets of children under 24 months of age in Chieng Mung and Muong Bon communes
did not reach the recommended levels of energy and some micronutrients, especially calcium.
