FEEDING SITUATION OF CHILDREN UNDER 5 YEARS OLD WITH ACUTE DIARRHEA AT THE VIETNAM NATIONAL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

Abstract

Acute diarrhea is a common disease in children under 5 years of age. Nutrition during
hospitalization is very important to improve outcomes of disease and to prevent malnutrition. Objective: to describe the actual energy, protein, lipid, glucid intake in the diet of
children under 5 years old with acute diarrhea. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 174
children under 5 years old with acute diarrhea who were admitted at the National Hospital
of Pediatrics from June 2017 to March 2018. Results: The average dietary energy for 3
days was 475.2 ± 239.0 kcal/day; the energetic macro-nutrients in the diet were as follows:
protein 25.2 ± 12.9g, Lipid 26.2 ± 13.4g and Glucid 35.2 ± 18.4 g. The prevalence of children achieving the recommended energy by age groups were very low. There were only
11.1% of children age 6-8 months, 12.9% of children 9-11 months, and 1.7% of children
12-23 months meeting recommended energy requirement. Especially, there were no children of 3-4 years old group achieving energy, glucid, lipid as the recommendation.
