BREASTFEEDING PRACTICES IN THE FIRST 6 MONTHS OF MOTHERS WITH CHILDREN UNDER 24 MONTHS OLD IN NGOC HOI COMMUNE, THANH TRI DISTRICT, HA NOI

Abstract

A cross sectional study was conducted to describe practices of early initiation of breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months of mothers with children under
24 months old in Ngoc Hoi commune, Thanh Tri district, Ha Noi. The sample size of 359
mothers having children under 24 months old in the whole commune was interviewed by
a questionnaire form. The results showed that 66.6% of mother initiated early breastfeeding within 1 hour after delivery; the reasons of late initiation were that mother was tired/
or had a cerasian session (37.8%), milk did not come down yet (30.3%); 7.5% mother discarded colostrum before giving the first breastfeeding; the percentage of children having
exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months was 28%; children, who were not having exclusive breastfeeding, was due to insufficient breastmilk (40.1%) or mother had to go back
to work (29.6%); Only 22.3% of mother still provided breastfeeding when came back to
their work, while most of them started to feed children porridge or formula. It is needed
to provide information, education and guidance for mothers on breastfeeding properly
