NUTRITION STATUS AND VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY IN CHILDREN FROM 6-11 YEARS OLD AT THE NATIONAL HOSPITAL OF PEDIATRICS

Abstract
Objectives: To describe nutritional status and Vitamin D deficiency among 155 primary school children ages (6-11 years old) at outpatient clinical nutrition department -
National Hospital of Pediatrics. Study methods: Cross sectional descriptive study. Results:
Underweight (23%), stunting (15.5%), wasting (16.1%) and obesity (3.2%). Vitamin D
deficiency was 23.9% and prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in city was higher than in
countryside (36.4% vs. 17%). Signs of vitamin D deficiency were leg pain (32.4%), back
pain (2.7%) and 58.3% children with bone age were lower than the real age. Conclusion:
prevalence of malnutrition and vitamin D deficiency have been high in primary school
aged children, therefore, more attention is needed on nutrition, especially on calcium and
vitamin D for optimum growth at adolescent.
