KNOWLEDGE ON BREASTFEEDING AND ACCESS TO INFORMATION OF MOTHERS WITH CHILDREN UNDER 24 MONTHS OLD IN NGOC HOI COMMUNE, THANH TRI DISTRICT, HA NOI

Abstract

The study was carried out with an aim to study knowledge and information access on
breast feeding of mothers, who had children under 24 months old at Ngoc Hoi Commune,
Thanh Tri District, Ha Noi. A cross sectional study design with sample size of 359 mothers
having children under 24 months old in the whole commune was done using pre-designed
questionnaires. The result of study showed that maternal knowledge on breastfeeding was
not so good (the rate of mothers, who had “good knowledge on breast feeding” was 15.9%;
knowing about early initiation of breastfeeding: 68%; correct understanding about definition of exclusive breasfeeding in the first 6 months: 46.5%; knowing that the children
less than 6 months should have exclusive breastfeeding: 67.1%). Regarding access to information, 73% of pregnant women received information relating to breastfeeding and
76.6% of mother received information on breasfeeding in the first 6 months. However,
the percentage of mother receiving information from healthcare workers was still really
low: 26.2%. In order to improve knowledge for early initiation and exclusive breastfeeding
in the first 6 months, it is necessary to strengthen education, information and communication on breastfeeding for women in reproductive age and community
