Abstract

A cross sectional description combined with longitudinal study was conducted on 209 female
Thai children born in 2006 in 3 middle schools in Thuan Chau district, Son La province
to assess the trends of anthropometric indicators and puberty characteristics of these subjects.
BMI for age z-score was used to assess nutritional status. The results showed that 85.2% of
the children already had menstruation while 14.8% did not have yet. The onset of menstruation
was commonly at 13-14 years old (66%). Weight and height gain was around 6.2 kg
and 6.9 cm. Stunting rate reduced sharply from 23.4% to 12.4%, in which severe stunting
reduced from 3.3% to 1.9%, moderate stunting reduced from 20.1% to 10.5%. Wasting rate
reduced from 2.4% to 0.5%. Overweight rate reduced from 4.3% to 1.0%.
