MALNUTRITION STATUS AMONG PUPILS AGED 11-14 IN THE ETHNIC MINORITY SECONDARY SEMI-BOARDING SCHOOLS IN VAN CHAN DISTRICT, YEN BAI PROVINCE 2017

Abstract
Nutritional care is essential for adolescent because of their rapid development and increased nutritional needs. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2017 on 1,298 students
aged from 11 to 14 in ethnic minority secondary semi-boarding schools of Van Yen district,
Yen Bai province, to determine malnutrition situation. The results showed that prevalence
of stunting was 38.8% at the severe level of public health concern; the prevalence of wasting was 7.2%; Overweight and obesity were 3.8%. Severe stunting was 10.5%; moderate
stunting was 28.3%; Prevalence of stunting varied by age groups, ranging from 34.1% to
44.0% (in males) and 27.6% - 42.0% (in females), respectively. There were significant
differences in stunting by age groups of female (p <0.05). Proper interventions should be
implemented to improve malnutrition status in secondary school students in ethnic minority areas with high rate of stunting.
