Abstract

Currently, the rate of overweight and obesity among children in Son La, especially
at primary school age, tends to increase. A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine
some factors related to overweight and obesity in primary school children at
two schools in Thuan Chau district and Son La city, Son La province. A total of 865
parents of children aged 7-11 in the area were selected to participate in the study. Using
a pre-designed questionnaire to collect information on children's family characteristics,
diets and physical activities through indirect interviews with parents or caregivers. The
results showed that male children, living in the city, Kinh ethnic group, family having the
average cost of food for the whole family > 4 million/month, having habit of eating a lot,
eating > 3 main meals/day, eating the last meal of the day after 20 o'clock, watching TV
or electronic devices > 2 hours/day, disliking of physical exercise were factors associated
with overweight and obesity in children.
