Abstract

A cross-sectional study was conducted for 150 nurses in 22 clinical departments and
10 leaders with in-depth interviews at Phu Tho General Hospital to evaluate nutrition care
practices for patients of nurses and to identify associated factors. The results revealed
that 82% of nurses considered nutrition care was their duty and about 70% nurses used to
develop patient diets, especially for very sick patients. Nurses who had been trained on
nutrition care was 75.3% with regular supervision of leaders (95.3%), as well as regular
coordination with nutrition department staff (100%). Shortage of human resource, knowledge and workload influenced nurses' patient care activities. Patient nutritional care is important and nurses play the main role. Hospitals need to recruit suitable nurses, revise
management procedure and have plan to train nurses to improve their knowledge and skills
to conduct patient nutrition care.
