Abstract

The study was conducted to explore some factors associating to early initiation of
breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding of mothers who had babies less than 24
months old in Ngoc Hoi Commune, Thanh Tri District, Ha Noi. Method: Cross sectional study with sample size of 359 mothers having babies less than 24 months old of
the whole commune using the designed questionnaires. Results: General knowledge of
mother about breastfeeding and delivery mode were factors related to early initiation
of breastfeeding. Mothers, who had good knowledge on breast feeding and those, who
had normal delivery had a higher rate of early initiation of breastfeeding; Those, whose
had good knowledge/ or knew information on exclusive breast feeding had a better
chance of practicing exclusive breastfeeding in the fist 6 month than other mothers.
