Abstract

Aims: To describe the status of knowledge and practices regarding nutritional care for children under 5 years old among mothers in Tan Quoi Trung commune, Vung Liem district, Vinh Long province in 2024.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 201 mothers of children aged 0-9 months, who were selected using a convenience sampling method. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a pre-designed structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and appropriate statistical tests were applied with a significance level of p < 0.05.

Results: The rate of mothers with correct knowledge and appropriate practices regarding nutrition were 84.1% and 76.6%, respectively. A significant association was found between maternal nutrition knowledge and practice (p = 0.037). In particular, the rate of correct knowledge was significantly higher among mothers with appropriate practices than those with inappropriate ones (87.0% vs. 74.5%). Regarding breastfeeding, the rate of mothers with adequate knowledge and adequate practice was 65.7 % and 67.7%, respectively. Furthermore, maternal nutritional care practices were significantly associated with child nutritional status (p=0.002). The prevalence of stunting and/or underweight was noticeably higher among children of mothers with incorrect practices than those with correct practices (23.4% vs. 6.5%).

Conclusions: The majority of mothers demonstrated adequate knowledge and appropriate practices regarding nutritional care for children under 5 years old. Maternal knowledge was associated with their practices, which was in tern directly associated with the nutritional status of the children. Therefore, it is essential to strengthen communication and practice-oriented education to improve child nutritional status in the local area.
