Abstract

Aims: To assess the nutritional status and anemia among children aged 6 to 59 months diagnosed with pneumonia.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to collect and analyze data from 207 children with pneumonia at Lao Cai Province General Hospital No. 1. The study focused on assessing the nutritional status and anemia among children aged 6 to 59 months diagnosed with pneumonia during the period from 2025 to 2026. Nutritional status was assessed using World Health Organization Z-scores. Their anemia status was classified.

Results: Among the 207 children, 56 were malnourished (27.05%) and 80 had anemia (38.65%). The children with a birth weight of less than 2.500 g had a 5.92-fold higher odd of malnutrition (95% CI: 1.42–24.5) and a 5.99-fold higher odd of anemia (95% CI: 1.2–29.6) compared with those having birth weight of 2.500 g or higher.

Conclusion: Malnutrition and anemia among children aged 6 to 59 months diagnosed with pneumonia are long-term health problems influenced by multiple factors. Nutritional counseling for caregivers should be strengthened. Children should be provided with adequate and diversified diets, and unnecessary dietary restrictions should be avoided during illness in order to reduce the risk of malnutrition and anemia.
