CHARACTERISTICS OF 24-HOUR DIETARY INTAKE AMONG BREAST CANCER PATIENTS UNDERGOING CHEMOTHERAPY AT VIETNAM NATIONAL CANCER HOSPITAL, 2024–2025

Abstract

Abstract:. To describe the characteristics of 24-hour dietary intake among breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at Vietnam National Cancer Hospital in 2024–2025.

Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 142 post-surgical breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy at Internal Medicine Departments 5 and 6 of K Hospital. 

Results: The study of 142 breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy showed that 24-hour dietary intake did not fully meet the recommended nutritional requirements. The mean energy intake was 1395.1 ± 386.8 kcal/day; 53.5% of patients did not achieve 70% of the recommended energy requirement. The distribution of macronutrients was imbalanced, notably with 65.5% of patients having lipid intake below the recommended level. Mean dietary fiber intake was low, at 12.5 ± 5.8 g/day. A high proportion of patients did not meet the recommended intake for several micronutrients, particularly vitamin A, calcium, and vitamin B12.

Conclusion: The 24-hour dietary intake of most breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy in this study did not adequately meet the recommended nutritional requirements. Inadequate energy intake and imbalanced macronutrient distribution were common, while dietary fiber, vitamin, and mineral intake remained limited.
