ANTHROPOMETRIC CHARACTERISTICS AND NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF ADOLESCENTS AGED 15–17 YEARS IN URBAN, PERI-URBAN, AND RURAL AREAS OF VIET NAM IN 2023

Abstract

Aims: To describe the anthropometric characteristics and nutritional status of adolescents aged 15–17 years living in urban, peri-urban, and rural mountainous areas of Vietnam in 2023. 

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,253 adolescents aged 15–17 years in Dong Da District and Dong Anh District of Hanoi City, and Moc Chau District of Son La Province. Anthropometric characteristics, including body weight, height, waist circumference, and hip circumference, were measured directly. Nutritional status was assessed using Height-for-Age Z-score (HAZ) and BMI-for-Age Z-score (BAZ) based on the WHO 2007 growth reference.

Results: Adolescents in Dong Da had significantly higher body weight, height, BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference, HAZ, and BAZ than those in Dong Anh and Moc Chau (p<0.05). The prevalence of stunting was the highest in Moc Chau (11.5%) and the lowest in Dong Anh (4.7%). In contrast, the prevalence of overweight and obesity was the highest in Dong Da, at 22.0% and 6.9%, respectively (p<0.001). 

Conclusions: Nutritional status differed markedly among adolescents living in areas with different levels of urbanization. The findings highlight the double burden of malnutrition among Vietnamese adolescents, with stunting remaining prevalent in rural mountainous areas while overweight and obesity are increasing in urban settings.
