NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND METABOLIC SYNDROME AMONG FOOTWEAR WORKERS AT VIET GLORY COMPANY, NGHE AN PROVINCE, 2023
Main Article Content
Abstract
Aims: To describe the nutritional status and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among footwear workers at Viet Glory Company, Nghe An, in 2023.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 300 workers. Anthropometrics, blood pressure, and fasting plasma glucose and lipid profiles were measured. MetS was diagnosed using the NCEP ATP III criteria modified for Asian populations. Descriptive statistics and group comparisons were performed.
Results: In the overall sample, the prevalence of chronic energy deficiency (CED) was 5.7%, and 14.0% were overweight–obese (OW–OB; BMI ≥25 kg/m²). The prevalence of MetS was 11.7%. Among MetS components, hyperglycemia (elevated fasting plasma glucose) was most frequent (33.0%), followed by low HDL-C (18.3%).
Conclusions: Footwear workers face a double burden of malnutrition, with persistent CED alongside overweight–obesity. MetS is present at a notable level, dominated by hyperglycemia and low HDL-C. These findings underscore the need for workplace nutrition education and routine metabolic-risk screening.
