Abstract

Aims: This study aims to describe the epidemiology of nutritional status among ethnic minority children aged 5 to 16 years in Tra Vinh Province.

Methods: A cross-sectional was conducted in September 2024 on the nutritional status, including stunting, wasting, and overweight/obesity, was conducted among 714 children aged 5-16 years in Tra Vinh City, Chau Thanh and Tra Cu District.

Results: The prevalence of children with normal nutrititonal status was 61.1%; 22.6% were wasted, and 16.4% were overweight and obese. The prevalence of stunting among children was 6.3%. No association was found between nutritional status and the communes (p > 0,05). A significant association was observed between nutritional status and age group across the entire study population, as well as in Chau Thanh district, and between gender and nutritional status in Tra Cu district (p < 0,05).

Conclusion: The prevalence of malnutrition among ethnic minority children in Tra Vinh province remains high, with differences observed across epidemiological characteristics. The findings provide scientific evidence suggesting the need for large-scale screening, with a focus on groups exhibiting specific epidemiological traits, as well as the implementation of nutritional interventions to improve child health.
