Abstract

Aims: To identify the status of malnutrition and its associated factors of malnutrition among children under 5 years old in Yen Trach commune, Phu Luong district, Thai Nguyen province.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between October 2024 and January 2025 targeting all 500 children under 5 years old in the studied commune. Nutritional status was classified according to the 2006 standards of the World Health Organization. Factors associated with malnutrition were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression. 

Results:The overall prevalence of malnutrition was 26.4% (13.2% in boys and 13.2% in girls). Stunting accounted for the highest proportion (24.2%) and wasting had the lowest prevalence (8.2%). Several factors were found to be associated with the nutritional status of children under 5, including the caregiver’s education level (OR = 1.82, p = 0.039), occupation (OR = 1.84, p = 0.017), age at childbirth (OR = 2.60, p = 0.029), and practices related to malnutrition prevention in children (OR = 1.89, p = 0.004).

Conclusion: Malnutrition remained high in stunting and moderate in wasting in terms of public health significance in the local area. Some factors associated with malnutrition in children under 5 years old included the educational level of the primary caregiver, maternal age at childbirth, and practices in preventing malnutrition. It is essential to strengthen nutrition education and communication for primary caregivers in order to improve the nutritional status of children under 5 years of age.
