Abstract

Aims: To describethe status of anemia and iron deficiency, and some related factors among children aged 6-11 months in 10 communes of Quang Xuong district, Thanh Hoa province.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted  between December 2018 and April 2019 on a random sample of 360 children aged 6-11 months.

Results: The average hemoglobin concentration was 114.9 ± 8.8 (g/L) in males and 114.4 ± 8.9 (g/L) in females. The median ferritin concentration was 23.5 (16.9-32.9) (µg/L) in males and 23.4 (16.1-34.6) (µg/L) in females. The prevalence of anemia and iron deficiency in the children was 27.8 and 15.3%, respectively. The independent factors associated with anemia were iron deficiency (OR=11.16, 95% CI: 5.79-21.51), and total family income over 5 million Vietnamese Dong/month (OR = 3.37, 95% CI:1.75-6.52).

Conclusion: The prevalence of anemia in the children aged 6-11 months was at a level of  moderate public health problemaccording to the classification of the World Health Organization. It is necessary to intervene early with dietary iron supplementation and iron fortification for the children aged 6-11 months.
