NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND FREQUENCY OF FOOD CONSUMPTION OF STUDENTS FROM 12-14 YEARS OLD IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS AT PHU CAT DISTRICT, BINH DINH PROVINCE

Abstract
Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed in 552 students of three secondary schools, Phu Cat District, Binh Dinh Province. Students were weighted and categorized by gender and age. The food frequency consumption of student was evaluated with questionnaires. Results: The proportion of malnourished and overweight students was 15.9% and 5.6% respectively. The number of overweight and obese students decreased gradually with age from 12 to 14 years old. In the daily diet of students, ripe fruits and vegetables accounted for the highest percentage with 70.5%, the food group providing animal protein was 33.3% for meat and 36.8% for fish. Percentage of students who had knowledge about food and nutrition was still low. The most influential nutrition information source came from family and friends. Conclusion: Malnutrition and overweight, obesity were still popular among secondary school students. Green vegetables and ripe fruits quite often appearred in the meals. Meanwhile, meat and fish appearred only several times during the week. With such a diet, students will be lack of energy and nutrients. Measures should be taken to help students raise awareness of nutrition for their health.
