Abstract

Objectives: A cluster randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of nutrient-rich product supplementation on nutritional status and dietary intake of stunted
children aged 2-5 years old in 2 communes of Yên Sơn district, Tuyên Quang province.
Methods: 200 stunted children at 2-5 years old were randomly divided into 2 groups.
The intervention group was given 2 packs of nutritional products/day for 9 consecutive months, the control group followed normal diet.
Results: The results showed that
the rate of children with upper respiratory tract infections (6-10 times) in 9 months
in the intervention group was lower than in the control group (26.5% versus 41.8%,
p<0.05). The average number of respiratory infection and the average number of days
of infection/episode/child in the intervention group were statistically significantly lower than in the control group. The percentage of children with constipation and having
undigested food in stool in 9 months in the intervention group was lower than in the
control group (20.4%; 3.1% vs 34.7%; 21.4%, p<0.05). The rate of children with diarrhea was 10.2% compared with 17.3%, p>0.05. After 9 months, the intervention group
had a lower percentage of children with dysbacteriosis than at baseline (36.3% versus
68.7%, p<0.05). Using nutritional products fortified with micronutrients for 9 months
effectively improves digestive status and respiratory infection in stunted children 2-5
years old.
