Abstract

Aims: To assess the nutritional status of lung cancer inpatients treated at Vietnam’s national cancer Hospital, Tan Trieu campus in 2021.

Methods: Cross-sectional study was conducted on 190 inpatients are being treated for lung cancer at Vietnam’s national cancer Hospital, Tan Trieu campus. Nutritional status of patients was identified using BMI, PG-SGA, and biochemical index including serum protein, albumin, pre-albumin, and  lymphocytes.

Results: The percentage of chronic energy deficiency in grades III, II, and I were 7.9%, 2.1%, and 18.9%, respectively. The percentage of patients in the last one month who lost weight at levels 1 and 2 was 78.9% and 7.9%, respectively. The proportion of patients at risk of malnutrition with PG-SGA class B was 21.6% and class C 17.4%. More than 20% of subjects had moderate to severe malnutrition with albumin levels < 27 g/L, 100% of patients had pre-albumin < 15 mg/dL and protein > 6,5 g/dL.

Conclusion: The rate of cancer patients at risk of malnutrition remains high. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the nutritional care of inpatients to ensure that they are always healthy and eligible for treatment and intervention.
