Abstract

A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess hand grip strength and intelligence scale
of 7-9 year old students in suburban schools of Hanoi. 602 students aged 7-9 years old from
Duyen Thai and Ninh So primary schools, Thuong Tin district, Hanoi were recruited for
the study. The proportion of 7-9 year old students having normal hand grip strength was
90.7%, that of ones having low level was 9.3%. The average processing speed index was
85.5 ± 13.2, which was at low average level based on IQ classification of Weschler 1981.
The average working memory index was 95.9 ± 14.9, at average level of IQ classification.
Processing speed index: The proportion of those at average level was the highest of 67.1%,
marginal level accounted for 22%, the rate of retardation was 10.1%, the rate of intelligence
was the lowest of 0.8%. Working memory index: The average level has the highest rate with
81.7%, marginal level accounted for 8%, the rate of intelligence accounted for 6.3%, the rate
of retardation was the lowest of 4%. Conclusion: Hand grip strength and intelligence scale of
7-9 year old students in the suburbs of Hanoi mainly reached the medium level.
