Abstract

Objective: To determine the percentage of malnourished patient with top of the most
common cancers (nasopharynx, lung, esophagus, larynx, stomach, colon, cervix, breast,
ovary and lymph node system cancer).
Method: A prospective study was performed on
480 patients treated in the HCM city Oncology Hospital in 2017.
Result: At the administration, the incidence of malnutrition was 34.8%, it was growing up to 37.9% at the end
of treatment. Patients with esophageal cancer were mostly malnourished (79.2%), then
gastric cancer (73.3%), and lung cancer (47.1%). Half of patients kept loosing weight during treatment. The rate of weight loss was different among cancer therapies, in which radiotherapy (68.7%) and concurrent chemoradiotherapy (76.6%) accounted for the most
frequencies. The patients’ energy dietary intake over 24 hour was 1297 kcal (460-
1900kcal) on average. There was 56.4% patients that intake met at least 75% energy requirement. The causes may be pain, nausea, anorexia, diarrhea, constipation, low income.
However, only 12.6% of malnourished patients were dietary consulted, 19% of patients
were tube fed, 9% of them were supplied with parenteral nutrition, 6% of them had delayed
treatment.
Conclusion: Malnutrition is very common among cancer patients not only occurs at the administration, but also happens during or at the end of treatment. Malnutrition
can stop or delay cancer treatment. Nutritional therapy at the HCM city oncology hospital
was not good enough. It need to be improved in the next future.
