EVALUATION OF EFECTIVENESS OF NUTRITIONAL CONSULTATION FOR MOTHERS WITH MALNOURISHED CHILDREN 6-24 MONTHS AT NUTRITION OUTPATIENT CLINIC, NATIONAL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

Abstract

Nutrition plays a very important role in the growth and development of the body, especially in children. Meeting nutrition requirements for children under 24 months of age
is pivotal for normal growth and development as well as improvement of children’s statue.
Objective: To describe the effectiveness of nutritional consultation on mothers’ knowledge and practice and children’s nutrition status in children aged from 6 to 24 months
old who were malnourised due to wrong feeding practices.
Methods: An intervention,
follow – up study in three months on 74 children who had malnutrition due to wrong feeding practices in Outpatient clinic of Nutrition Department in National Children’s Hospital
from 01 Feb 2014 to 31 Oct 2014.
Results: The ratio of boys/girls was 1/1. The percentage
of children aged 12 to 17 months old was 43.3%. Most of the mothers had finished high
school. After 3 months, the children’s weight and height increased by 0.5 kg and 1.8 cm,
respectively. The percentage of children who had moderate and severe malnutrition decreased by 37.9% and 9.4%, respectively. 47.3% of the children no longer had malnutrition. Knowledge and practices of the mothers improved substantially after 3 months of
consultation.
Conclusion: Nutritional consultation had good effects on improving
mother’s knowledge and practice as well as increasing children’s nutritional status.
