Abstract

Vegetables are an essential part in daily meal, providing many vitamins and minerals for the
body. However, since vegetables are nutritious, they are highly vulnerable to pest attacks and one
kind of vegetable can be infested by many pests. In addition to selecting disease-resistant crops,
rotating crops, fertilizing and timetabling properly, the application of PPCs is very common. Our
research carried out in 400 vegetable growing households in Vu Chinh and Vu Phuc communes
in Thai Binh city showed that PPCs were mainly used for leaf and stem vegetables (92.0% and
35.5%, respectively). The most popular plant protecting chemical group was pesticides (96.5%).
The greatest spraying frequency was 3 times or higher with 40.2% while the lowest frequency
was 1 time (6.0%). The vegetables were sprayed mainly at the beginning and the end of the harvest.
60.0% of participants in 2 communes reported that they mixed two PPCs before spraying.
