Abstract

Nutrition status of adolescent is an important public health concern. Cross-sectional
study was conducted on 1,472 children in ethnic minority boarding schools in Van Chan
district, Yen Bai Province in 2017 to describe body composition features of adolescents
aged 11-14 in the mountain region. The result showed that their height of children was
lower than that of other rural children in previous studies, which was a concern; Mean
height in boys and girls were 143.1±11.4 cm and 142.3± 8.6 cm, respectively; mean height
of combined sexes was 142.7±10.1cm, increasing by age groups from 135.0 to 152 cm in
boys and 135.9 to 148.9 cm in girls; Mean total body fat and fat mass in girls were higher
than boys (p <0.001); Mean muscle mass and fat free mass in boys were higher than girls
(p <0.001); Therefore, it is necessary to have interventions to improve height of adolescent
children in mountainous and ethnic areas in order to improve their stature.
